US road trip 07

Day 30 - Sunday 8th of april - Alamogordo - El Paso (105 mls / 1h30)

This sunday was one of our best day! We started by visiting the White Sands National Monument. It looks like snow, the sand is so ... white, so sweet. It's magic. Then we took the road during one hour to get to El Paso at 1 pm. We let the car at the border (recomended) and cross the bridge to Mexico by feet. It's quite dangerous there, drugs, thiefs,... on the street. By chance, we met the best police mens of the world! I never saw that! We asked a information and we stayed with them during 5 hours!!! And not in jail, we were visiting the town (Juares) escorted by them!!! We started by a police car tour, showing us what to see. Then we went to eat togeter. They were so nice and helpfull that we invited them. It's the first time I give money to the police with the smile! Then we walked around, showing us everything, explaining our trip to local people,... It's so nice to walk on the streets with three bodyguards!!!But you have to to know that they did it aswell because it's to dangerous alone there. After 5 hours they still didn't want to let us go, they were still showing things,... But we finaly left at 7 pm. We went back to El Paso, and to complete a perfect day, stayed at the first motel we were for the cheapest rate since we started (Coronado motel, 26$). We probably going out in the mexican side tonight.

Jour 30 - Dimanche 8 avril - Alamogordo - El Paso (172 kms / 1h30)

Ce dimanche fut l'un de nos meilleurs jours! On a commencé par la visite du White Sands National Monument. Ca ressemble à de la neige, c'est si...blanc, si pur, si doux! C'est magic. Ensuite on a repris la route pendant une heure pour arriver à El Paso à 13h. Nous avons laissé la voiture à la frontière (recommandé) puis avons traversés le pont du Mexique à pied. C'est assez dangereux de l'autre côté de la frontière avec drogue, vols, ... dans les rues. Par chance, nous avons rencontrés les meilleurs policiers du monde! Jamais vu ça, on demande un renseignement et on se retrouve avec eux pendant 5h!!! Et pas en prison, ils nous ont escortés pour une visite de la ville (Juares)!!! On a commencé par un tour en voiture de police, nous montrant ce qu'il y avait à voir. Ensuite nous sommes allés manger ensemble. On les a invités pour les remercier. C'est la première fois que je donne de l'argent à un flic avec le sourire! Ensuite, on s'est baladés dans la ville, nous montrant les commerces, les bars,... expliquant notre voyage à tout le monde. C'est trop bien de se balader avec trois gardes du corps!! Mais vous devez savoir que c'est relativement dangereux tout seul, c'est pourquoi ils nous ont accompagnés. Après 5 heures, ils voulaient plus nous lâcher, nous montrant encore des choses. On les a finalement quittés à 19h, sommes retournés à El Paso, et pour completer cette excelente journée, on est restés au premier motel rencontré. Le moins cher depuis le début de notre voyage (Coronado motel, 20 eur). Ce soir, nous allons surement sortir du côté mexicain.

Day 31 - Monday 9th of april - El Paso - El Rio (424mls / 8h)

We visited El Paso during the morning and as we loved the mexican side yesterday we came back there for the afternoon. We ate some taquitos, bought some souvenirs,... We left at 6 pm in direction of Alpine. When we got there, we decided to belong until we are tired. At 1 am, we saw the lights of the police, it was for us. We were at 45 mls instead of 30 and the insurance wasn't in orde! By chance he only gave us a warning. We gonna call the insurance tomorow to be in orde. After that, we had to put some gas and the closest station was at 35 mls and when we arrived there at 3 am, it was closed. We decided thus to sleep there in the parking of the Days Inn.

Jour 31 - Lundi 9 avril - El Paso - El Rio (679 kms / 8h)

Nous avons visités El Paso ce matin et comme on avait adoré le mexique hier, on y est retournés pour l'après-midi. On y a mangés des petits tacos, achetés des souvenirs,... On est partis à 18h en direction d'Alpine. Lorsqu'on y est arrivés, on a décidé de continuer jusque quand on serait fatigués. A une heure du matin, on a vu les sirènes de police dans le rétro, c'était pour nous! On roulait à 70 kms/h au lieu de 50 et notre assurance n'était pas en ordre! Par chance, on s'en est tirés avec un avertissement. Demain, on doit appeler l'assurance pour être en ordre. Après ça, on devait mettre de l'essence mais la station la plus proche était à 5O kms et quand on y est arrivés à 3h du matin, elle était fermée. On a donc décidé de dormir dans la voiture sur le parking du Days Inn.

Day 32 - Tuesday 10th of april - El Rio - San Antonio (160 mls / 4h)

When we wake up, we asked the housewife if it was possible to take a shower, she send us to the manager of the hôtel, who at our great surprise, accepted. We left at 1 pm and arrived in San Antonio at 5 pm. We found a motel (Nu Capri motel, 45 $). Then we got to the downtown. The riverwalk, was quite nice but excepted that, .... Then, the laundry took us two hours. And we are not going out tonight as tomorow we gonna try to wake up really early as we have planned a long day.

Jour 32 - Mardi 10 avril - El Rio - San Antonio (260 kms / 4h)

Lorsqu'on s'est réveillés, on a demandé à la femme de chambre si c'était possible de prendre une douche, elle nous envoya au directeur de l'hôtel, qui a notre grande surprise, accepta! Nous sommes partis à 13h et sommes arrivés à San Antonio à 17h. On a trouvé un motel (Nu Capri motel, 34 euros). Ensuite nous sommes allés dans le centre ville. Le riverwalk était sympa mais à part ça... Ensuite, laver le linge nous a pris deux heures. Et nous ce soir, on ne sort pas; demain on va essayer de se lever tôt car on a programmé une longue journée.

Day 33 - Wednesday 11th of april - San Antonio - New Orleans (544 mls / 9h)

We beat our record today! We were on the road at 7 o'clock! At 10 am, we stopped two hours in Houston. We went to on the 60th floor of the JP Morgan Chase Tower to get a nice view of the town. The weather was quite nice (up to 84°F). After a long way, we arrived in New Orleans at 6 pm. There are still some parts in really bad state but the french quarter look to be lively. We wanted to go to a hostel tonight thus after two hours, we finaly found one (India Hostel, 45$). Tonight we went in the french quarter in the Bourbon street which lives 24 hours on 24. It was really nice.

Jour 33 - Mercredi 11 avril - San Antonio - New Orleans (880 kms / 9h)

météo: San Antonio - ensoleillé - 18°C

On a battu notre record aujourd'hui! On était sur la route à 7h du matin! A 10h, on a fait une pause de deux heures à Houston. On est notamment monté au 60ème étage de la tour JP Morgan Chase pour avoir une jolie vue de la ville. Le temps était assez bon (jusqu'à 30°C). Après un long trajet, on est finalement arrivés à la Nouvelle Orléans à 18h. Ils y a encore des quartiers en très mauvais états mais le quartier français a l'air de bien bouger. On voulait dormir dans une auberge de jeunesse ce soir donc après deux heures de recherche, on en a finalement trouvé une (India Hostel, 34 eur). Ce soir, on est allés dans le quartier français à la rue Bourbon, laquelle vit 24 heures sur 24. C'était vraiment sympa.

Day 34 - Thursday 12th of april - New Orleans - Tallahassee (389 mls / 6 h)

Weather: New Orleans - sunny - 81°F

This morning, we went to the main area where Katrina has hit. It's really impressive! We spoke with some people rebuilding their houses. They speak with a lot of revolt. They lost everything and still received quite nothing. The money go first to the rich. A lot of houses are still abondonned. Sometimes, only the porche in concret still remains. Most of the houses were build in wood and didn't resisted. We can see that they have a lot on their hart, that they need to speak about. After that, we changed completly, with the visit of the River Walk shopping center along the pier. We left the town at 4.30 pm in direction of Tallahassee. We arrived there at 11.30 (We lost again 1 hour), found quickly a motel (prince morat motel, 40 $). We were thinking to stay at the hotel but on our way to find something to eat, we found one of the numerous nightclubs and decided to finish the night there.

Jour 34 - Jeudi 12 avril - Nouvelles Orléans - Tallahassee (634 kms / 6h)

Météo: Nouvelles Orléans - ensoleillé - 28°C

Ce matin, nous sommes allés dans la partie la plus abimée par Katrina. C'est vraiment impressionant! On a parlé avec des gens qui essayent de rebatir leur maison. Ils parlent avec révolte. Ils ont tout perdu et n'ont toujours presque rien reçus. L'argent va d'abord aux riches. Beaucoup de maisons sont toujours abandonnées. Parfois il reste seulement le porche en beton. La plupart des maisons étaient en bois et n'ont pas résistées. On rescent qu'ils ont beaucoup sur le coeur et qu'ils ont besoin de parler. Ensuite, on a complètement changé avec la visite du River Walk (centre commercial longeant le port). On a quitté la ville a 16h30 en direction de Tallahassee. On y est arrivés à 23h30 (on a encore perdu une heure), avons trouvés un motel rapidement (prince morat motel, 30 eur). On pensait y rester sagement mais sur notre route pour trouver quelque chose à manger, nous sommes tombés sur l'une des nombreuses discothèques et n'avons pas pu résister d'y terminer la nuit.
