US road trip 07

Day 5 - wednesday 14th of march - Chicago - Barrington ( 40 miles - 1 h)

weather: Chicago - cloudy - 42°F

What a change!! We have lost 60°F! Visit of Chicago.We went to eat at MACY'S, a big shopping centre. We met there an american who used to live in France. We invited him to join us for the meal and he gaves us some advices for our trip. He might even visit us in California. That's one of the reasons of our trip, to meet interesting people with whom to share ours experiences. Tonight, we left Chicago to visit friends in the neightbourough. They greeted us and offered us the hospitality in a sumptuous flat. We shared a nice meal around which we spoke about the conditions of life, estate and the life in US. It's was so interesting that we haven't seen the time collapse and went to sleep at 5am.

Jour 5 - mercredi 14 mars - Chicago - Barrington (60 kms - 1 h)

Quel changement! On a perdu 16°!! Visite Chicago. On est allés manger au MACY'S, un grand centre commercial. On y a rencontré un américain très sympa qui a vécu 3 ans en France. Nous l'avons invité à notre table et il nous a donné quelques conseils pour notre voyage. Il viendra peut être nous rendre visite en Californie. C'est une des raisons pour lesquelles on fait ce genre de voyage, pour rencontrer des gens interessants avec qui partager ses expériences. Le soir, on a quitté Chicago pour aller voir des amis qui habitent à une heure de Chicago. Ils nous ont accueillis et hébergés dans un appartement somptueux. Nous avons partagé un bon repas au cours duquel nous avons discuté des conditions de vie, de l'immobilier et de la vie aux Etats - Unis. C'était si passionant qu'on a pas vu le temps s'écouler et nous sommes allés nous coucher à 5h du matin.

Day 6 - thursday 15th of march - Barringhton - Waterloo (304 miles/ 6 hours)

weather: Barrington - sunny - 37°F

A bit cold today but a really interesting morning. Our friend shown us a church, the willow creek (http://www.willowcreek.com). We never saw that before in our life. It was amazing. I think it was the most interesting think from the beginning of our trip! It's so huge, it's even bigger than a theater. It's like an enterprise. You have an information desk, restaurant, gym,... and the office take place in a huge auditorium, with bands playing, karaoké, flatscreens, ... We hadn't the opportunity to follow a celebration but we definatly gonna try to find one before the end of our trip. It's so modern, they compare the bibel with actuality things,...Now, we understand why so many people are believers in America!If you see it, you want to go. They should follow this example in europe to reconquer people.
After that, we saw some tipical houses and a library. We took the road back at 2 pm and arrived in Waterloo at 8 pm. We found an motel (pine tree motel, 40$) and relaxed a bit before a last drink in a pub.

Jour 6 - jeudi 15 mars - Barrington - Waterloo (480 kms/ 6 heures)

Un peu froid aujourd'hui mais matinée très interessante. Notre ami nous a montré une église, the willow creek. (http://www.willowcreek.com). On avait jamais vu ça de notre vie. C'était incroyable. Je pense que c'est même la chose la plus interessante depuis le début de notre voyage. C'est énorme, c'est comme une entreprise. Il y a un bureau d'information, des restaurants, salles de sports,... et la célébration a lieu dans un énorme auditoire avec des groupes musicaux, karaoké, écrants plats,... On a pas eu la chance d'assister à une messe mais on va tout faire pour en faire une avant la fin notre voyage. C'est si moderne,, ils comparent la bible avec l'actualité. Maintenant, on comprend pourquoi il y a tant de croyants en amérique. Si vous le voyez vous voulez y aller. Ils devraient s'en inspirer en europe si ils veulent reconquérir le peuple.
Après ça, on est allés voir des maisons typiques et la librairie. On a repris la route à 14h et est arrivé à Waterloo à 20h. On a trouvé un motel (Pine tree motel, 30 euros) et s'est reposé un peu puis avons été prendre un dernier verre dans un café.

Day 7: Friday 16 of march - Waterloo - Pierre (551 miles / 9h30)

weather: sunny - cloudy - cold - 32°F

small visit of Waterloo. On one side, the centrum, realy quite with typical houses and on the other side, big shopping centers, restaurants,...We left the city at 11h30. We arrived in Sioux Falls at 5 pm. We went to eat something, visited the falls and decided to belong our journey at 6.30 pm. We will stop in Pierre, after 4 hours of road. That will allow us to visit the munt Richmond tomorow. We tried to go out but there were nothing interesting.

Jour 7: vendredi 16 mars - Waterloo (882kms / 9h30)

météo: ensoleillé - nuageux - froid - 0°C

Petite visite de Waterloo. D'un coté, le centre, très calme avec des petites maisons typiques et de l'autre centre commerciaux, restaurants....On a quité la ville à 11h30. On est arrivé à Sioux falls vers 17h. On est allés mangé, visiter les chutes et avons décidé de reprendre la route vers 18h30. On s'arretera à Pierre, après 4h de route, ce qui nous permettra d'aller voir le mont Richmond demain. On a essayé de sortir mais il y avait rien d'interessant.

Day 8: Saturday 17 of march - Pierre -Rapid city (372 mls / 7h30)

weather: Pierre - sunny - 42°F

Depart of Pierre at 11.30 after a rapid tour of the city (capitol, lake, ...). Today, we visited first, the part on the north of Pierre (Oake Dam, La Plant, Eagle Butte,...). Completly change of vegetation (dry, montainous, interminables roads,....) and of time zone aswell (we won one hour again) . We saw aswell a herd of caws passing the road. They were accompagned by typical cowboys. One more time, they were really friendly, came to see us and explain us what they were doing. Now we are going a bit more in the west. By arrival of the Mount Richmond (the famous faces of the 4 presidents on the rock), the vegetation changed again, more mountains, others colours,... The temperatures aswell, up to 65°F. After that, we watched an universitary basket ball game in Rapid City. Then we found a motel (Time Inn, Rapid City, 40 $). After some time on internet, we went out at 1.30 am to find a pub to celebrate St Patrick. Unfortunatly they were closing. But there were quite a lot of people on the street in front of the pub and after only 5 min, we have been proposed to join some of them in a house party. We did it and it and had a realy good time, speaking with youngs americans about interesting subjects during all the night.

Jour 8: Samedi 17 mars - Pierre - Rapid City (595 kms / 7h30)

météo: Pierre - ensoleillé - 7°C

Départ de Pierre à 11h30 après un tour rapide de la ville (capitole, lac,...). Aujourd'hui, on a commencé par la partie au nord de Pierre (barrage de Oake, La Plant, Eagle Butte,...). Changement complet de végétation (sec, valloné, routes interminables,...) et de fuseau horaire (on a encore gagné une heure). On a aussi eu l'opportunité de voir traverser un troupeau de vache accompagné de cowboy typiques. Une fois de plus, ils étaient vraiment sympa, ils sont venus nous voir et nous expliquer ce qu'ils faisaient. maintenant, on se dirige un peu plus à l'ouest. A l'arrivée de Mont Richmond (les fameux visages des 4 présidents gravés dans la roche), la végétation changea à nouveau, plus de montagnes, autres couleurs,... Les températures aussi, allant jusquà 19°C. Après celà, nous avons assistés à un match de basket universitaire à Rapid City. Nous avons alors trouvé un motel (Time Inn, Rapid City, 30 eur). Après quelque temps sur internet, nous sommes sortis à 1h30 pour trouvé un bar pour fêter la St Patrick. Malheureusement, ils fermaient.Mais il y avait encore pas mal de gens dans la rue en face du café et après seulement 5 minutes, on s'est fait invité dans une soirée dans une maison. Ce que nous avons fait et avons passés un bon moment, parlant avec de jeunes américains sur différents sujets toute la nuit.

Day 9: sunday 18th of march - Rapid City - Cody (418 miles / 7h30)

weather: Rapid City - sunny - 71°F

Departure from Rapid City at 1 pm. Small stop in Deadwood, historic town with saloons and casinos from the past. Realy nice, beautifull weather. Now, we are passing through big mountains, and it's also colder. It was quite a long journey today, but necessary. We arrived at 10 pm and found a motel (carter mountain motel, 50 $) in Cody to be ready for the Yellostone tomorow. But the problem is that most of the road are closed and we are not sure to visit it.

Jour 9: dimanche 18 mars - Rapid City - Cody (669 kms / 7h30)

météo: Rapid City - ensoleillé - 21°C

Départ de Rapid City à 13h. Petit arret à Deadwood, ville historique avec ses saloons et casinos de l'époque. Très joli, beau temps. Maintenant, on passe par de grosses montagnes et il fait plus froid aussi. C'était un assez long trajet aujourd'hui mais nécaissaire. Nous sommes donc arrivés vers 22h et avons trouvé un motel (Carter Mountain Motel, 38 eur) à Cody, afin d'être prêts pour le Yellostone demain. Seulement le problème est que la plupart des routes sont fermées et on est pas sûr de pouvoir le visiter.
